Depression: Beyond Serotonin Levels

Recent research has disproven the theory that serotonin plays a role in depression. Serotonin, a chemical messenger that relays signals between brain areas, is found in the brain. Serotonin imbalances were thought to influence mood and lead to depression.

Scientists have shown in the journal ACS Chemical Neuroscience that mice without the ability to produce Serotonin do not show depression-like symptoms. They did this by performing a variety of behavioural tests. According to the World Health Organization, more than 350 millions people are affected by Clinical Depression. It is also one of the most common causes of disability around the world.

Prozac, an antidepressant introduced in the 1980s, worked by increasing levels of serotonin in the brain. Scientists were then led to believe that increasing serotonin levels was the solution to depression. This ideology led to the introduction of many new drugs. But, further research showed that between 60 and 70 percent of patients felt depressed even after taking the drugs.

Scientists developed “samples” of mice who were unable to produce serotonin and tested them on a variety of behaviours. The mice were extremely aggressive, compulsive, and did not show any signs of depression. The “sample” of mice that were under stress behaved almost the same as the majority of normal mice.

In their report, researchers concluded that the findings suggested that serotonin was not a major player in the condition and that other factors were involved. Scientists concluded that the findings could have a major impact on the formulation of future antidepressants.
