It occurs when your blood sugar becomes higher than the normal value. This can increase the health risk of other problems such as heart disease, kidney disease, vision problems and nerve damage.

2. Heart Disease

Heart Disease and Obesity
Heart diseases are common in obese people.

Heart diseases are common in people with obesity. Over time, fat starts depositing in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. People with obesity may experience higher blood pressure, high blood sugar and high lipids in the blood which contributes to heart diseases.

3. Stroke

Stroke and heart diseases are interrelated. Stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is hindered. A stroke can cause severe damage to the brain cells, and can result in disabilities such as speech and language impairment, weak muscles and disturbance of thinking, and reasoning skills.

4. Sleep Apnea

This is a condition when a person may momentarily stop breathing while sleeping. People with obesity are at a greater risk of having sleep apnea. This usually happens because more fat is stored around their neck thus making the airway shrink. A smaller airway can result in snoring and difficulty in breathing at night. Losing weight can reduce the amount of fat in the neck and the risk of sleep apnea.

5. High Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure
More pressure in the arteries is known as high blood pressure or hypertension

When there is fat depositing in the body cells, the blood vessels become narrow and need to circulate more blood to the body organs. This means that your heart has to work harder to pump more blood to other parts of the body. This puts more pressure on the walls of the arteries. More pressure in the arteries is known as high blood pressure or hypertension. People suffering from chronic hypertension can suffer from heart diseases.

6. Depression

Obese people may experience depression. They deal with societal stigmas that may cause feelings of sadness and lack of self-worth.

7. Liver Disease

People with obesity are prone to develop a liver disease known as fatty liver disease. This is a condition in which extra fat builds up in the liver. This extra fat can damage the structure and function of the liver and can result in cirrhosis. Usually, a person may not experience any symptoms but slowly it may result in chronic liver problems, and ultimately liver failure. The best way to manage this is to lose weight, exercise and avoid alcohol drinking.

8. Gallbladder Disease

The gallbladder plays an important role in the process of digestion because it stores a substance known as bile. It is passed to the small intestines during digestion which helps in the digestion of fats. People with obesity are at risk of developing gallstones. Gallstones occur when bile builds up and accumulates in the gallbladder. People with obesity may have higher levels of cholesterol in bile, which may disturb the normal functioning of the gallbladder. This leads to the formation of gallstones that may be painful.

9. Pregnancy Complications

Pregnancy Complications due to Obesity
Obesity may lead to the risk of complications during pregnancy and delivery

Women who are overweight are more prone to suffer from high blood sugar and high blood pressure. They can develop insulin resistance. This increases the risk of complications during pregnancy and delivery. The risks involved during pregnancy include blood clots, premature birth, miscarriage, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, stillbirth and defects of the brain and spinal cord.

Ayurvedic Remedies to Lose Weight

Are you struggling to lose weight? If you really want to fight that stubborn fat, our ancient medical system, known as Ayurveda, uses age-old techniques that target the exercise-resistant fat by igniting your digestive fire. What sets Ayurveda apart is its personalized approach. No two people are the same and hence no two diet exercise and supplement regimens to lose weight will be.

Ayurveda is the science of healing which originated around 5000 years ago. Ayurveda, the wellness system being one of the oldest traditions is now becoming popular in the modern world globally. So let’s shed some light on several Ayurveda eating practices that tell us a lot about the effectiveness of Ayurveda in weight loss methods.

Obesity has become one of the major concerns during the Covid-19 pandemic as it greatly increases complications. Obesity always was one of the major causes of death. In order to lose weight many people hit the gym, eat a lot of supplements and spend a lot on organic food.

The extremely busy lifestyle does not permit them to follow it in a routine manner. This routine might just work fine for you in losing weight but it can hurt you internally due to the severe side effects of the products. Ayurveda is the science of a balanced routine where diet and discipline go hand-in-hand and will never harm your body; instead, it will sync your mind, body and soul!

What Are The Common Causes Of Obesity?

  • Genetics. A person is more likely to develop obesity if his/ her parents are obese. Genetics also affects hormones involved in fat regulation.
  • Physical inactivity. Inactive people burn fewer calories than people who are active.
  • Overeating. Foods high in fat or sugar, for example, fast food, fried food and sweets, have high energy density.
  • Carbohydrates. Experts believe that simple carbohydrates like – sugar, fructose, desserts, soft drinks, beer, wine, etc. lead to weight gain, because they are more rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream than complex carbohydrates like – pasta, rice, grains, vegetables, raw fruits, etc. Thus causing a more pronounced insulin release after meals than complex carbohydrates.
  • Regularity of eating. There are many reports of overweight people eating less often than people with normal weight. Scientists have observed that people who eat small meals 4 to 5 times daily have lower cholesterol and stabilize blood sugar levels, than people who eat less frequently.
  • Emotional factors. Some people tend to eat excessively in response to emotions such as boredom, sadness, stress or anger. While most overweight people have no more psychological disturbances than normal-weight people, about 30% of the people who seek treatment for serious weight problems have difficulties with binge eating.
  • Diseases such as hypothyroidism, insulin resistance and polycystic ovary syndrome also contribute to obesity.

Eating According To Your Dosha

According to Ayurvedic teachings, human beings need to balance three forms of energy, and each is linked to natural elements:

  1. Vata: It is the energizing force of the body and mind, and it governs our nervous systems. When in balance, the Vata is lively and energetic. Dry skin, cough and dry hair are problems that one may face when the Vata is imbalanced.

According to the Ayurvedic diet:

  • Eat 3 to 4 small meals daily every 2 hours.
  • Include lots of cooked vegetables in your diet.
  • Avoid dark shade vegetables like eggplants, peppers, tomatoes etc.
  • Consume juicy, sweet fruits. Avoid astringent fruits like cranberries and raw apples.
  • Limit legumes.
  • Include a wide variety of nuts and seeds, especially in the form of milks.
  • Avoid addictive products like sugar, alcohol and tobacco.
  • Avoid raw, frozen or cold food.
  1. Pitta: Pitta is the fire element. Pitta-dominant individuals are strong willed, determined and tend to have leadership qualities. If the Pitta is imbalanced, it can lead to anger and agitation, and may even cause burning disorders such as ulcers and inflammation.

According to the Ayurvedic diet:
Vegetable Salad

  • Include lots of raw vegetables and salads in your diet.
  • Eat meat, seafood and eggs in moderation.
  • Avoid spicy food, coffee and alcohol.
  • Avoid nuts and seeds.
  • Limit your intake of legumes and lentils.
  • Include sweetened dairy products.
  1. Kapha: This dosha maintains body resistance. Kapha-dominated individuals are said to be thoughtful, calm and steady. To maintain a balance, regular exercises, stimulating activities and an extra intake of fluids can keep the energy flowing. The energy of your body’s structure is associated with earth and water.

In the Ayurvedic tradition, the way you eat should correspond with your dosha.

According to the Ayurvedic diet:

  • Limit the quantity of food you eat.
  • Avoid dairy and foods high in fat.
  • Limit protein.
  • Eat lots of leafy greens and vegetables grown above ground.
  • Eat astringent fruits like apples, cranberries, mangoes and peaches.
  • Limit animal foods, nuts, and seeds.

Diet Right!

Your dosha determines right diet for you:

  1. The Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet is inspired by the foods our caveman ancestors ate in the Palaeolithic era. Experts say going Paleo will help you lose weight and strengthen immunity. This diet generally involves eating meat, seafood, eggs, veggies, nuts, fruit in moderation, and healthy fats like olive oil. Foods to be avoided include grains, legumes, dairy, potatoes, salt, processed food, vegetable and seed oil.

The Ayurveda Take…

  • A Pitta type would do much better on a Paleo diet, because a Pitta’s strong digestion could probably handle the meat better.
  • Vata-dominant individuals have more delicate digestion, so they would have a hard time.
  • Kaphas type doesn’t need as much fat or protein as the other types, but does incredibly well with lots of veggie intake.
  1. The Keto Diet

The Keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that shares some strong similarities with the Paleo diet, the Atkins diet, and other low-carb regimens. By minimizing your carbohydrate intake and upping your fat intake, experts say, your body enters a metabolic state called ketosis and becomes a fat-burning machine. People who eat keto favour low-carb foods like meat, fish, eggs, veggies and natural fats like olive oil and butter. They also avoid sugar and starch products like bread, pasta, sweets, rice, soda, juices and potatoes.

The Ayurvedic Take…

  • Vata-dominant individuals would do well with all the natural fats in the ketogenic diet.
  • Pitta dosha individuals would be okay, too.
  • But it would be really rough on a Kapha type. Kaphas have the slowest metabolism and their constitutions are not designed to have a lot of fats.

The keto diet does involve fasting, which may not be ideal for all body types. When you’re ketogenic, you have an early, light dinner and then you essentially fast for 12-14 hours. As a result, your body goes into ketosis – a metabolic process where you start to use the body’s fats as a way of surviving, and then your glucose reserves run out. This type of fasting might not be ideal for Pittas, who already have a high metabolism.

  1. The Vegan Diet

Vegans eat wholesome, plant-based foods like whole grains, legumes, fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds, while avoiding animal products like meat, seafood, dairy and eggs.

The Ayurvedic Take…

  • According to Ayurveda, dairy is considered Sattvic, whereas vegans avoid it totally. Foods like ghee, milk, paneer (cheese curds) and lassi are part of the daily diet.
  • Vegans also tend to go for more of a raw diet, which wouldn’t be good for Vata types, because they don’t do so well with cold or raw foods. But Pitta and Kapha types could do it.
  1. Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is a pattern of fasting and eating over a defined period of time.

The Ayurvedic Take

  • If you have Vata dosha, going more than 12 hours without food isn’t going to feel great. Vata tends to get low blood sugar constantly when they don’t eat enough. People with Vata dosha are so active through their day and a power-packed breakfast is a must.
  • Pitta dosha individuals tend to have a big appetite. While you’ll do great with your 12 hour fast and might even be able to get it to 14 or 16 hours, be wary if you get too strict or controlling about your food.
  • Kaphas tend to hold on to everything. Memories, past resentments and calories all stick to a kapha easily. That’s the reason, kaphas don’t need to eat as much as Vata and Pitta doshas, even though they might have a massive sweet tooth.

Ayurveda, on the other hand, still recommends eating balanced meals and not overdoing it. When we overeat, we clog our body tissues – stomach, liver and intestines have too much to process, leading to low energy and brain fog. Basically, you undo all of the benefits of intermittent fasting! So if you can’t control your appetite with an extended fast, then try and do it for a shorter period of time.

Ayurvedic Weight Loss Remedies For Overall Health

Triphala: Triphala helps in the absorption of vitamins and minerals. Consuming Triphala helps in detoxification of the body leading to the clearing of the blood vessels, liver, stomach and overall digestive system.

Ginger is a powerhouse of antioxidants and thus helps in weight loss dramatically. Add some grated ginger and lemon drops to a glass full of lukewarm water and drink daily.

Green Tea:
Green tea is full of antioxidants and helps to reduce weight naturally.

Kalonji: Kalonji is the powerhouse of antioxidants and fiber. These elements help you fight obesity by speeding up the digestion process. Incorporate Kalonji in your daily cooking

Black Pepper: Black pepper contains a powerful compound called piperine, which supplies both its pungent flavour and potential weight-lowering effects.

Aloe Vera
aloe vera
Aloe Vera has long been known to cause weight loss, with its pro-digestive properties. You can drink Aloe Vera juice every morning or have it any manner that pleases you.

Do your daily yoga or exercise for 45 to 60 minutes. Find an activity that you can do for the rest of your life, or at least for the foreseeable future.

Give yourself 5 to 10 minutes for peace and relaxation in the morning. Mind-body practices like yoga and meditation help to alleviate stress, one of the main causes of weight gain.

Opt for 3 meals a day plan, without any snacking. Food is a fast-burning fuel, and when your body is given a constant fuel line, it forgets how to burn fat.

* Eat your breakfast – a medium-sized meal – between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m.

* Eat your lunch –largest meal – between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

* Eat your dinner – smallest meal – between 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Include all six tastes in your diet. In Ayurveda, we know six tastes: Sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. Make sure to incorporate all six tastes into your diet daily. Sweet, sour and salty tastes are anabolic or building in nature and need the pungent, bitter and astringent tastes, which are catabolic, or burning in nature, to balance them out. Too many sweet, sour and salty tastes can cause fast weight gain. Foods that are bitter, such as leafy veggies – spinach, kale etc.; pungent, such as ginger, spicy peppers; and astringent, such as cranberries, pears, offer healthy counterpoints to the building nature of the sweet, sour and salty tastes.

After each meal, go for short walks to stimulate digestion.

Go to bed with the sun and rise with the sun.
