Urticaria or hives is a relatively common form of allergic reaction that causes raised red skin-welts. Urticaria is also known as nettle rash or uredo. These welts may be 5 mm (0.2 inches) in diameter or more, they itch severely, and often have a pale border. Dermographic lesions, induced by brisk scratching or trauma, are linear streaks with a surrounding flare.

Angio-edema is recognized clinically as pale areas of deep non-pitting edema with diffused borders, chiefly affecting the face or any other part of the body. Involvement of the larynx may lead to hoarseness, stridor and dyspnea, and may be fatal.

Diagnosis of Urticaria

The presence of wheals is diagnostic of urticaria. The history is important in an attempt to identify the cause, which is different in different people.

Investigations should include identification of any focus of infection, or provocation and withdrawal of the suspected agent.
