Lyme disease is an infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdoferi via a tick bite. Ticks that transmit Lyme disease can retain the infection throughout their life and transmit the infection to subsequent hosts. Lyme disease can prove dangerous if the bacteria mutate into antibiotic resistant strains and this has raised a global concern on the limitations of antibiotic treatments.

Lyme disease results in a reddish rash on the skin, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, headache, etc. The organism grows extremely slowly in tissue culture media. Spirochetes on culture will not yield in tissue samples or body fluid of the patient infected with Lyme disease and is thus clinically diagnosed. It was named after the town of Lyme, Connecticut, where a cluster of cases were identified in 1975.

 

Causes of Lyme disease

Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of an infected tick. Ticks that transmit Lyme disease can retain the infection throughout their life and transmit the infection to subsequent hosts. A person can be re-infected with the disease, as the body does not maintain a natural immunity. The bacterium is able to move around the body through the bloodstream and between tissues. There is at least one case report of transmission by a biting fly. Lyme spirochetes have been found in biting flies as well as mosquitoes. There is also some anecdotal, largely unconfirmed evidence of sexual transmission. Signs and Symptoms of Lyme disease

Early Stage

The early stage of Lyme Disease is usually marked by one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Flu-like symptoms, fever, and chills
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Headache
  • Lymph node swelling and
  • Fatigue

The key to early diagnosis is recognition of the characteristic Lyme Disease rash called erythema migrans. This rash often takes bull’s-eye appearances and is observed in about 80% of Lyme Disease patients. The rash may appear on the skin within a day of the bite or as late as after a month. Antibiotics are the Only USA FDA Approved Treatments for Lyme disease. Ayurveda and TCM are considered medicine in India and China.
