Types

1) Idiopathic

This is the most common form of scoliosis, and next to the paralytic form, is responsible for the most severe curves. As the name suggests, the cause is not known. It has been attributed to paralysis of the intrinsic muscles of the spine, caused by sub clinical poliomyelitis. Girls are more commonly affected than boys. Complete normality of the rest of the body differentiates it from paralytic and other forms of scoliosis. There is almost certainly a genetic involvement, since the disease has an increased familial incidence.

2) Congenital

This type of scoliosis is associated with congenital spinal abnormalities. Associated anomalies are common, particularly of the spinal cord and kidneys. A myelogram and intravenous pyelogram are indicated if surgery is contemplated.

3) Paralytic

Paralysis causes muscle imbalance around the vertebral column, which may produce scoliosis with rotary changes. In its most severe form, there is a collapsing spine. Here, the patient cannot even sit up and respiration is difficult.

4) Postural

This affects children of school-going age, and is characterized by being a simple C curve without rotation of the vertebrae . The deformity is fully mobile and correctable.

5) Pulmonary

Pulmonary disease may produce scoliosis if disease of one lung results in contraction of the chest wall on that side.

Signs and Symptoms

Signs of Scoliosis are:

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made after a thorough physical examination of the spine, shoulders, hips, waist and legs. The angle of the spine is figured out from observation. In normal conditions, the spine is a straight line. Any deviation of more than 10 degrees on either side is suggestive of scoliosis.

These findings can be confirmed by X-ray.

Treatment
