 Alopecia means loss of hair. Usually, it happens in a circumscribed manner, and is restricted to a particular area of the body. The most common area affected is the scalp. This pattern is called Alopecia areata. Hair loss may be temporary or permanent.

Causes

-- Certain hairstyles that pull on the scalp can also lead to patchy alopecia.
-- Chemotherapy also causes alopecia.
Signs and Symptoms
A bald patch, usually noticed on the scalp, which is circumscribed and well-defined. The skin is soft, smooth and totally devoid of hair.
After 2 to 6 weeks, further patches appear simultaneously in any part of the scalp. The course is variable; hair may re-grow within 6 months. The prognosis is always uncertain.
Diagnosis
Symptoms of hair loss in patches, is usually suggestive of the disorder.
Another presentation would be thinning of hair closer to the base.
Another way of diagnosing the condition is to gently pull a handful of hair along the edge of the patch. In cases of alopecia, hair will tend to pull out more easily than normal hair.
Treatment
Treatment of alopecia is disappointing. In limited and small patches of alopecia areata, satisfactory results may be obtained by intralesional injections of hydrocortisone.
Re-growth of hair usually takes place after 2-4 weeks.
Systemic corticosteroids induce re-growth, but hair is lost again when the treatment is stopped.
