According to Ayurvedic teachings, human beings need to balance three forms of energy, and each is linked to natural elements:

  1. Vata: It is the energizing force of the body and mind, and it governs our nervous systems. When in balance, the Vata is lively and energetic. Dry skin, cough and dry hair are problems that one may face when the Vata is imbalanced. 

According to the Ayurvedic diet:

  • Eat 3 to 4 small meals daily every 2 hours.
  • Include lots of cooked vegetables in your diet.
  • Avoid dark shade vegetables like eggplants, peppers, tomatoes etc.

  • A Pitta type would do much better on a Paleo diet, because a Pitta’s strong digestion could probably handle the meat better. 
  • Vata-dominant individuals have more delicate digestion, so they would have a hard time. 
  • Kaphas type doesn’t need as much fat or protein as the other types, but does incredibly well with lots of veggie intake.

The Keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that shares some strong similarities with the Paleo diet, the Atkins diet, and other low-carb regimens. By minimizing your carbohydrate intake and upping your fat intake, experts say, your body enters a metabolic state called ketosis and becomes a fat-burning machine. People who eat keto favour low-carb foods like meat, fish, eggs, veggies and natural fats like olive oil and butter. They also avoid sugar and starch products like bread, pasta, sweets, rice, soda, juices and potatoes.

  • Vata-dominant individuals would do well with all the natural fats in the ketogenic diet. 
  • Pitta dosha individuals would be okay, too. 
  • But it would be really rough on a Kapha type. Kaphas have the slowest metabolism and their constitutions are not designed to have a lot of fats. 

The keto diet does involve fasting, which may not be ideal for all body types. When you’re ketogenic, you have an early, light dinner and then you essentially fast for 12-14 hours. As a result, your body goes into ketosis – a metabolic process where you start to use the body’s fats as a way of surviving, and then your glucose reserves run out. This type of fasting might not be ideal for Pittas, who already have a high metabolism.

  1. The Vegan Diet

Vegans eat wholesome, plant-based foods like whole grains, legumes, fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds, while avoiding animal products like meat, seafood, dairy and eggs.

The Ayurvedic Take…

  • According to Ayurveda, dairy is considered Sattvic, whereas vegans avoid it totally. Foods like ghee, milk, paneer (cheese curds) and lassi are part of the daily diet.
  • Vegans also tend to go for more of a raw diet, which wouldn’t be good for Vata types, because they don’t do so well with cold or raw foods. But Pitta and Kapha types could do it.
  1. Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is a pattern of fasting and eating over a defined period of time.

  • If you have Vata dosha, going more than 12 hours without food isn’t going to feel great. Vata tends to get low blood sugar constantly when they don’t eat enough. People with Vata dosha are so active through their day and a power-packed breakfast is a must. 
  • Pitta dosha individuals tend to have a big appetite. While you’ll do great with your 12 hour fast and might even be able to get it to 14 or 16 hours, be wary if you get too strict or controlling about your food.
  • Kaphas tend to hold on to everything. Memories, past resentments and calories all stick to a kapha easily. That’s the reason, kaphas don’t need to eat as much as Vata and Pitta doshas, even though they might have a massive sweet tooth. 

Ayurveda, on the other hand, still recommends eating balanced meals and not overdoing it. When we overeat, we clog our body tissues – stomach, liver and intestines have too much to process, leading to low energy and brain fog. Basically, you undo all of the benefits of intermittent fasting! So if you can’t control your appetite with an extended fast, then try and do it for a shorter period of time.

Guggulu: The Magical Herb of the Millennium

Guggulu or Commiphora mukul has grabbed the attention of Medical Scientists and researchers all over the world. Guggulu is a traditional ayurvedic remedy and has been used for thousands of years.

Guggulu, in Sanskrit means “One that protects us from Disease”.
