The chemical sodium benzoate can be found in a variety of foods and drinks as a preservative. Let’s first get the facts straight about Sodium benzoate. Benzoic acids are found naturally in many fruits and condiments. Sodium benzoate, however, is created when benzoic acids combine with sodium hydroxide.
Why is Sodium Benzoate Harmful
The natural sodium benzoate in small amounts is safe. However, the problem arises when lab-synthesized versions are added liberally to extend the shelf-life of foods and drinks. The main reasons are:
- Some people may be allergic to sodium benzoate, and experience allergic reactions such as asthma or hives.
- It is well known that sodium benzoate deprives the cells of oxygen, resulting in their death
- The immune system may be weakened by it
- Combining it with Vitamin C or E causes the formation of benzene, a carcinogen.
Biogetica has reprimanded certain brands and manufacturers for using sodium benzoate over the past two years. The manufacturers and brands at that time thought we were going overboard and claimed it was legal worldwide and that the data against Sodium Benzoate was questionable. The FSSAI has banned Sodium Benzoate in India, but not just Maggi. It will take time before the ban is implemented. Many food products contain sodium benzoate.
