DIET FOR HYPERTHYROIDISM
Hyperthyroidism is a condition wherein the metabolic rate of the body increases. The Thyroid gland becomes hyperactive due to which the ability of the body to burn the calories consumed increases and consequently the individual keeps on losing weight. Hence it is vital that you take extra care of your diet so that you do not lose excess weight. You have to select foods which help to suppress the activity of the thyroid gland.
Weight and Hyperthyroidism
Body weight doesn’t have an impact on hyperthyroidism — being overweight or underweight won’t cause the disease. However, hyperthyroidism can cause you to lose weight and make gaining weight more difficult because of your high metabolism. People with hyperthyroidism may need to add calories to their diets so that they don’t lose too much weight. Once hyperthyroidism is treated and under control, losing weight should no longer be an issue, according to the American Thyroid Association.
Aim of the diet: – To help reduce the symptoms & maintain ideal body weight.
The Diet should include – whole grains, plenty of fruits & vegetables, Nuts, Meats.
Thyroid-suppressing foods in the diet include:
- Broccoli, Soya products, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Radish, Kidney beans (Rajmah), Pearl Millet (Bajra), and Green leafy vegetables like Mustard Greens, Spinach, etc. These are believed to depress the function of your thyroid gland
- Soybeans and Soy products can help an over-stimulated thyroid.
- Whole grains like Millet and Brown Rice, combined with Nuts and Seeds are rich sources of Zinc, an important element necessary for body functions that might be depleted due to hyperthyroidism. Most people with Hyperthyroid may experience deficiency of vital nutrients, vitamins and minerals due to their high metabolism. Therefore the diet should be supplemented with adequate sources of vitamin B, vitamin C, calcium and magnesium from natural sources.
Foods to Consume Moderately:
Apricot, Banana, Black Currant, Blueberry, Cantaloupe, Cherry, Cranberry, Gooseberry, Grapefruit, Italian Plum, Mandarin Orange, Mango, Orange, Papaya, Pear, Pineapple, Raspberry, Red Currant, Rose Hips, Strawberry.
Foods to Avoid:
Avoid foods high in Iodine, such as Sea food, Iodized salt, Eggs, Curd, and Milk. Avoid excess consumption of Tea, Coffee, Caffeine, Mint, Confectionaries etc…
