What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition affecting the joints, resulting in stiff, aching, swollen and hard to move bones and joints. The Arthritis Foundation lists more than 60 conditions that fall under this category; however, the most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a classic degenerative condition, often seen in middle aged people. Continuous strain on the joints coupled with regular wear and tear causes the cartilage lining the joints to come away. As the cartilage cushion depletes, the affected bones start to rub against each other resulting in pain, inflammation, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Hands and weight-bearing joints including the hips, knees, feet, and spine are most commonly afflicted by osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the synovial fluid surrounding the joints causing it to become painfully inflamed. This inflammation then progresses to damage your bone and cartilage over time. Rheumatoid arthritis is most commonly seen in the wrists and hands.

Symptoms of Arthritis

The most common symptoms of arthritis include the inability to move the joints due to pain and stiffness. Other symptoms include:

  • Redness of the affected joint
  • Swelling
  • Decreased motion of the joint involved

Risk Factors for Arthritis

The risk factors for arthritis include the following:

  • Family history: Arthritis may run in a family. If your parents suffer from arthritis, you are at a risk of developing it too. Genetic predisposition makes you more susceptible to the condition.
  • Age: The risk of arthritis increases with age
  • Sex: Women are more likely to suffer than men.
  • Previous joint injury: If you have suffered a joint injury in the past, you are more likely to develop arthritis.
  • Obesity: Excess weight puts additional strain on your knee and hip joints, which may break down cartilage and cause or aggravate arthritis symptoms. This happens because fat cells are said to release cytokines which are inflammatory chemicals that play a role in both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and cytokines levels are elevated in obese individuals.

Treatment options for Arthritis

The conventional system of medicine offer painkillers to relieve pain, NSAIDs to assuage pain and inflammation, and topical creams to soothe painful agitated joints. Some doctors advise surgery that may take a toll on your health and make you suffer more.

With limited options available, more and more people are resorting to other alternative modalities of treatment that claim to not only address the manifested symptoms but work at a deeper level and potentially rejuvenate and restore joint health. Alternative protocols include herbs, resonance homeopathic remedies, and nutritional supplements.

Interestingly, given the increased prevalence of herbal medicine, conventional doctors are also warming up to the possibility of employing herbs and other natural ingredients in an attempt to optimize bone and joint health.
