Winter and early spring are known to bring on allergies, colds and even laryngitis.
In simple terms, laryngitis means inflammation of the larynx or the voice box.
This causes hoarseness of voice and a temporary loss of speech. It starts with a tickling sensation in the throat followed by a dry cough and hoarseness.
In severe cases, swallowing and breathing also become difficult.
The cause is either bacterial or viral infection in most cases. It can also occur due to overuse of the vocal cords as is seen in case of singers.
Voice is a very essential part of our existence and we need to do all we can to preserve it and restore it. Self care based on common sense is all that is needed in most cases of laryngitis.
The best way of curing laryngitis is to rest the vocal cords. Avoid talking and whispering as far as possible. Drink plenty of warm fluids to reduce the swelling on the cords. Steam inhalation also hastens the recovery process.
Avoid smoking and alcohol as it irritates the vocal cords causing hoarseness.

Honey may help to soothe the throat.
