Scabies can be a very dangerous skin condition. Sarcoptes scabiei is the mite that causes this terrible skin condition. The condition is contagious, and it spreads rapidly. The mite burrows quickly deep into the skin in order to lay eggs. Itching is intense immediately following the mite bite and symptom severity increases at night.

What causes scabies?

The mite that causes scabies can be microscopic. The female mite burrows into the skin, laying eggs. The larvae mature on the skin’s surface and then spread to other areas of the body. Affected persons begin to experience itching a month or more after contracting the infection. The immune system is compromised due to an allergic reaction. Close physical contact, or the sharing of clothing and bedding by an infected person can spread the infection.

  • Different species of mites affect both animals and humans. Animal scabies can infect humans for a brief period of time.
  • Infections can also occur in healthcare facilities, nursing homes, child-care centers, and other care facilities.
  • Mites can be spread sexually from an infected individual to a healthy one.
  • The infection can also be transmitted to humans by pets.

Why does scabies occur?

The main way scabies is transmitted is by direct contact between skin and skin. Weak immune systems make older adults and young children more susceptible to infection. Infants and young children are more susceptible to infection when they come into direct contact with other children or adults in the home. In nursing homes, the elderly can be infected. Transmission occurs in adults through sexual contact.

Symptoms

The following symptoms are important for scabies:

  • Itching that is severe and worsens at night
  • On the skin, small blisters form irregular burrow tracks. The tracks usually form in the skin folds, but they can occur anywhere on the body.

Treatment Options

The conventional treatment for scabies includes a wide range of topical ointments that contain harmful ingredients like permethrin. A doctor may prescribe a drug that is used to treat parasites. This medication can have a variety of side effects. Permethrin can cause a burning and tingling sensation.
