Causes of Eye Cataract

Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens  that lies behind the iris and the pupil. If you are above 60 and experience cloudy and blurring vision, there are chances you may have a cataract. It is a very common condition all over the world.

What causes Cataract?

The lens inside the eye works similar to a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina for clear vision. It also adjusts the eye’s focus, letting us see things clearly both when close and far away.

The lens is mostly made of water and protein. The protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear and facilitates the light to pass through it.

But as we grow older, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is called cataract, and over time, it may grow larger and cloud more area of the lens, deteriorating vision in the bargain.

The reason for this clouding of eye lens with age is not clearly known. Researchers have identified various factors that may cause cataract, some of which include:

  • Advancing age
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight and other sources
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Prolonged use of corticosteroid medications
  • Statin medicines used to reduce cholesterol
  • Alcohol consumption
  • High myopia
  • Previous eye injury or inflammation
  • Previous eye surgery
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Family history

There are researches that suggest that cataract can be caused by oxidative changes in the human lens. This is supported by nutritional studies that show that antioxidants in fruits and vegetables may help to address certain types of cataract.

Foods That may Help

There are certain nutrients that are believed to help improve your vision. These nutrients include:

  • Vitamin E
  • Lutein
  • Vitamin A
  • Omega- 3 fatty acids
  • Vitamin C

Treatment for Cataract

Conventional treatment for Cataract involves surgical removal of the cataract. Surgical treatment involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a substitute lens.

Is Cataract surgery a safe option?

There is no doubt that surgery has become the go to treatment for cataract removal. However, this invasive procedure has its fair share of risks. Sometimes we tend to not calculate everything that could possibly go wrong in a surgery. Complications like increasing pain, redness, swelling and discharge around the eyes, and changes in the field of vision have been reported after Cataract surgery. Some people also dread going under the knife and therefore never report about their deteriorating eyesight.

Natural Treatment for Cataract

Modern sciences suggest an underlying cause for eye Cataract. Holistic doctors believe that the main cause of any disorder may be stress and lack of energy. Thus, the root cause of the problem is energetic and not physical.  Work with a holistic doctor to discuss about your concern. You can adopt different natural ways such as maintaining a nutritious diet rich with Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Lutein and Omega 3-fatty acids, and meditation.
