Infectious mononucleosis is a viral infection caused by the Epstein Barr virus. This virus belongs to the Herpes simplex family. It is commonly seen in young adults and adolescents.
The virus is usually transmitted through saliva (therefore the name Kissing disease), blood, sharing drinks and utensils.
Typical symptoms include sore throat, malaise, fever and enlargement of lymphatic glands in the neck region.
The condition is self limiting and usually lasts for 6 to 8 weeks.
Treatment is symptomatic and is aimed at controlling fever and inflammation. There is little evidence to support the use of anti viral medications.
