Causes of Gingivitis

Gingivitis begins with irritation of the gums. This is caused by the plaque that accumulates between the teeth and gums. Plaque is formed from the sugar and starch we consume. Plaque has to be removed by brushing and flossing the teeth daily, because it re-forms very quickly.

 

If plaque is not removed properly every day, it develops into a harder substance called tartar or calculus. This becomes a reservoir in which bacteria thrive.
