Arthritis Diet
Arthritis is a general term encompassing conditions that share joint pain and inflammation. Typical treatment involves pain-reducing medication. While there is no definitive arthritis diet, research suggests including anti-inflammatory foods in your diet and limiting foods that may trigger joint pain.
Recommended Diet:
Gluten free vegetarian diet improves the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Bitter/ sour edibles and food which are easy to digest help in alleviating arthritis. Flaxseeds, Fish, Soy, Beans, Broccoli, Garlic, Nuts & Seeds are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids- Intake of Omega-3 is known to naturally reduce the inflammation and pain.
Foods That Should be Consumed Moderately if you Have Arthritis:
Oily food, Butter, food heavy to digest, too much of wheat, even whole Wheat Bread should be moderated.
Foods to Avoid:
High fat such as fatty beef, pork and lamb, poultry skin, ice cream, cheese, bacon, bologna, salami, pepperoni and beef sausage. Too many calories from refined sugars such as candies, cookies, soft drinks and refined food such as white rice, white bread, dairy foods, meat, coffee or other caffeinated beverages are best avoided in this condition.
Home Remedies:
- Dried ginger powder about 1teaspoon with Jaggery taken two times daily offer significant pain relief in many.
- Take a teaspoonful on Castor oil daily with a glass of warm water it helps clear bowel and reduce pain and inflammation.
- Soup prepared with Green gram, Turmeric, fresh Ginger and Garlic is very helpful.
- Hot water fomentation
- Avoid sour foods like Lemon, Tamarind, Amla, Curd, Pickles, Buttermilk, etc.
Diet/ Lifestyle Recommendations:
Foods containing omega-3 fats have been found to help reduce inflammation associated with some forms of Arthritis. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include Fish oil, Linseeds, Walnuts amongst others. Foods rich in calcium also help in cases of Arthritis. Calcium rich foods include dairy products such as Soy, Beans, Almonds, Broccoli, and Eggs. Keeping one’s weight under control is the key because increased weight gain may increase the pressure on the joints. Avoid fasting and drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids.
