Appearance of abnormal cells on the surface of the cervix is termed as Cervical Dysplasia. Although this is not cancer, it is considered to be a precursor to cervical cancer.
Every year, between 250,000 and 1 million women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical dysplasia. It commonly affects women between the ages of 25 to 35. Left untreated 30% to 50% of these may progress to invasive cancer of the cervix.
Almost all cases of cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer are caused by the Human Papilloma virus (HPV). A group of at least 30 types of HPVs are transmitted through sexual contact and affect the ano-genital region. HPV type 16 and type 18 are the strains found most frequently in precancerous lesions and in HPV cervical cancer. A pap test is the most important diagnostic procedure a woman can take for detecting cervical dysplasia.
HPV Testing -

Colposcopy -

The physician then examines the cervix for presence of abnormal cells using a bright light and a special electronic microscope (colposcope). Under the lens of colposcope, after applying acetic acid, abnormal cells appear white and normal cells appear pink. Biopsy is usually done if abnormal cells are seen.

Cervical biopsy is done if colposcopy shows the presence of abnormal tissue cells. An endocervical cutterage, may also be done to determine if the abnormal cells go beyond the surface of the cervix.

Developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), this system is a standardized method of classifying pap smear results. Cone Biopsy -
The cone biopsy is usually performed for high-grade dysplasia, dysplasia that recurs, and suspected cancer. It is used to diagnose and remove abnormal tissue. Here, a cone-shaped tissue sample is surgically removed from the cervix under general or spinal anesthesia.
