Sciatica Causes

Herniation of Spinal Disk: The spinal column is made of vertebrae. Disks are the cartilaginous structures that separate the vertebrae. They keep the spine flexible and act as shock absorbers. When these disks herniate or protrude out, they cause compression on the nerves that originate from that level of the spine. Sciatica occurs when a nerve root in the lumbar spine is compressed. This is the most common cause of sciatica.

Other conditions that compress the sciatic nerve are as follows:

-- Age: Changes occur in the disks with age. These changes in the spine are the most common factors leading to sciatica.
