Causes

Herniation of Spinal Disk: The spinal column is made of vertebrae . Disks are the cartilaginous structures that separate the vertebrae . They keep the spine flexible and act as shock absorbers. When these disks herniate or protrude out, they cause compression on the nerves that originate from that level of the spine. Sciatica occurs when a nerve root in the lumbar spine is compressed. This is the most common cause of sciatica.

Other conditions that compress the sciatic nerve are as follows:

-- Age: Changes occur in the disks with age. These changes in the spine are the most common factors leading to sciatica.

-- Lifestyle: This includes the nature of your occupation. Any job that requires sitting for a long time, twisting the back or lifting heavy weights makes one prone to developing sciatica.

Tingling and numbness: There is a sensation of tingling or feeling of needle pricks in the feet or soles of the affected side. Numbness is felt anywhere in the path of the sciatic nerve leading up to the foot.

Loss of movement: There could be a loss of movement in the affected leg due to severe and prolonged nerve compression.

Besides these symptoms, there could be loss in bladder or bowel functions. This is a serious complication and requires immediate medical attention.
