 Lyme Disease is an infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdoferi (Bb) bacteria. Lyme Disease often starts with flu-like symptoms in its early stage; muscle and joint pain, lymph node swelling, fatigue and nervous system abnormalities.

About Lyme Disease
Lyme Disease results in a reddish rash on the skin, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, headache, etc. The organism grows extremely slowly in tissue culture media. Spirochetes on culture will not yield in tissue samples or body fluid of the patient infected with Lyme Disease. Lyme Disease is thus clinically diagnosed. It is named after the town of Lyme, Connecticut, where a cluster of cases were identified in 1975.
Causes of Lyme Disease
Lyme Disease is transmitted by the bite of an infected tick. Ticks that transmit Lyme Disease can retain the infection throughout their life and transmit the infection to subsequent hosts. A person can be re-infected with the disease, as the body does not maintain a natural immunity. The bacterium is able to move around the body through the bloodstream and between tissues. It can also invade tissue, replicate, and leave the cell, destroying the cell as it emerges. This action may aid the bacteria's ability to hide from the immune system response. There is at least one case report of transmission by a biting fly. Lyme spirochetes have been found in biting flies as well as mosquitoes. There is also some anecdotal, largely unconfirmed evidence of sexual transmission. Lyme spirochetes have been found in semen and breast milk, though transmission through these routes has yet to be proven.
Signs and Symptoms of Lyme Disease
Early Stage
The early stage of Lyme Disease is usually marked by one or more of the following symptoms:
• flu-like symptoms, fever and chills
• Muscle and joint pain
• Headache
• Lymph node swelling and
• Fatigue
The key to early diagnosis is recognition of the characteristic Lyme Disease rash called erythema migrans. This rash often takes bull's-eye appearances and is observed in about 80% of Lyme Disease patients. The rash may appear on the skin within a day of the bite or as late as after a month. It may start as a small, reddish bump, about half-an-inch in diameter. Common sites are the thigh, groin, trunk and armpits. The rash may be warm, but it is usually not painful.
Late Stage
Symptoms may not appear until weeks, months, or years after a tick bite. Whenever they appear, they are:
• In some, the first and only sign of Lyme disease is arthritis. Arthritis is most likely to appear as brief bouts of pain and swelling, usually in one or more large joint, especially the knees.
• Sometimes, nervous system abnormalities are the only evidence of Lyme Disease. These can include numbness, pain and meningitis.
• Mild abnormalities in liver functions.
• Difficulty in breathing, pneumonia.
• Premature birth, stillbirth, miscarriage and neonatal deaths.
• Less frequently, irregularities of the heart rhythm may occur.
Congenital Lyme Disease
It is possible for the bacterium to pass across the placenta from mother to fetus, resulting in congenitally acquired Lyme Disease.
The great diversity of clinical expression of signs and symptoms of gestational Lyme borreliosis parallels the diversity of prenatal syphilis.
Lyme Disease Diagnosis
No test can completely rule out Lyme Disease. The Bacterium often goes undetected in infected individuals. Some common blood investigations are:
• Titer (ELISA, EIA, and IFA)
• Western blot-test produces bands indicating the immune system's reactivity
• C6 Lyme Peptide ELISA
• Antigen detection
• Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and
• Culture
Lyme Disease Treatment
Conventional Treatment:
Single-dose doxycycline therapy may be considered for deer tick bites, when the tick has been on the person for at least 36 hours.
Traditional treatment of acute Lyme Disease usually entails a two-week to one-month course of antibiotics, at the minimum. In later stages, the bacteria disseminate throughout the body and may cross the blood-brain barrier, making the infection more difficult to treat.
Lyme Disease, when diagnosed at a later stage, is treated with oral or IV antibiotics. Ceftriaxone is often used here, for a minimum of four weeks.
Lyme Disease Alternative Treatment
The herb andrographis, though not specifically studied for Borrelia species, has been found to have both anti-malarial and anti-bacterial properties against a wide range of organisms in vitro and in vivo. Some herbalists therefore, recommend it for treating Lyme Disease.
Other alternative practitioners recommend large doses of salt combined with vitamin C, based on the theory that this protocol kills bacteria, by enhancing the activity of elastase and possibly by other mechanisms. The safety and efficacy of this approach however, remains unproven.

Instructions
Children (3-10 year olds): To be taken with meals and swallowed with water or juice. Not to be taken with hot liquids. • Do not take with hot liquids.

The recommended initial level is 1 capsule 2 or 3 times daily for a week before increasing the amount.
The level can thereafter be increased to 2 capsules 2 or 3 times daily.
The maintenance level can be up to 4 capsules, 2 or 3 times a day, necessary for optimum health effects. In stubborn cases, this may be increased. The length of time for taking the supplement is an individual response.
Possible Side Effects
Monolaurin is a non-toxic nutritional lipid. Sometimes, however, it may result in a 'Herxheimer Reaction' - where you may experience flu-like symptoms, headache, rash, etc. This is merely a result of rapid killing of bacteria and the consequent accumulation of endotoxins in the body, because the body has not had enough time to get rid of them naturally. All you have to do in such a case is cut back on the level or even stop for a few days before taking lower levels and then going higher.
