Causes

The most common causes are the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV).

The infection is transmitted through saliva, sexual contact, droplet infection, and in some cases, during blood transfusion.

The disease is named because of the raised count of mononuclear leucocytes due to the infection. Atypical white blood cells are seen in peripheral blood slides.

The highest incidence is seen between the ages of 15 and 17.

Signs and Symptoms

Most cases of mononucleosis are asymptomatic throughout life. Symptoms usually appear after an incubation period of 6-8 weeks.

The most common symptoms are:

--Fever - This is always present, though it may vary in intensity.
--Sore throat - This is the most common symptom. It resembles streptococcal pharyngitis or any respiratory tract infection. Irregular white patches are seen on the tonsils and the back of the throat.
