Causes

Gingivitis begins with irritation of the gums. This is caused by plaque that accumulates between the teeth and gums. Plaque is formed from the sugar and starch we consume. Plaque has to be removed by brushing and flossing the teeth daily, because it re-forms very quickly.

If plaque is not removed properly everyday, it develops into a harder substance called tartar or calculus. This becomes a reservoir in which bacteria thrive. Once tartar develops, teeth need to be cleaned by a dentist every 3 to 4 months. The longer tartar remains on the teeth, the more it irritates the gums. Such prolonged irritation leads to swelling and pain in the gums.
