What is Erectile Dysfunction?

The penis is a complex structure of muscles, blood vessels and nerves. During sexual stimulation, the sensory nerves carry the impulse to the brain and the brain in turn signals the muscles of corpus cavernosa (a chamber inside penis) to relax, allowing blood to flow in and fill the spaces. The blood creates pressure in the corpora cavernosa, making the penis expand. This is how an erection takes place. After ejaculation, the nerves stop sending messages and the muscles contract, causing the blood flow to reduce. This makes the erection go away.

Erectile Dysfunction(ED) is a functional disturbance in the erection process. In this disorder, there is either an inability to develop or to maintain an erection of the penis.
