Causes

1) Infection: This could be viral or bacterial, though viral conjunctivitis is more common. Bacterial conjunctivitis is usually associated with upper respiratory tract infection and is more common in children.

2) Allergy: Any allergen like pollen can also trigger an allergic reaction. It may be associated with an allergic upper respiratory tract infection.

3) Injury: Conjunctivitis may result from injury to the conjunctiva due to any foreign substance or irritant.

4) Blocked tear duct: In some new born babies, conjunctivitis may result due to a blocked or incompletely opened tear duct.

Signs and Symptoms

The most common signs and symptoms are:

1) Redness is present in both the eyes. It may be mild or severe, depending on the cause.In viral conjunctivitis, there is diffuse pinkness of the conjunctiva, whereas in bacterial conjunctivitis there is extreme redness of the conjunctiva.

2) Itching is present in all forms of conjunctivitis, but is more severe in cases of allergic conjunctivitis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made on the basis of signs and symptoms presented by the patient and examination of the eye. Swabs may be taken to do a bacterial culture, if there is no response to topical antibiotics.
