NATURAL ALTERNATIVES THAT CAN HELP IMPROVE JOINT FUNCTIONING

Arthritis is a musculo-skeletal disorder, which causes inflammation in one or more joints, characterised by severe pain and stiffness.  There are over 100 types of arthritis, with osteoarthritis being the most common type. It is typically caused by daily wear and tear, and worsens with age. Other types include rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, which are auto immune disorders, septic (infective) arthritis, Juvenile arthritis etc. The most common complaint in arthritic patients is joint pain. The pain is often constant and localised to the joint affected. The affected joint becomes stiff, inflamed and painful, leading to detrimental changes in it. Treatment usually includes medications like acetaminophen (paracetamol) and NSAID’S like ibuprofen.

However, most of the conventional medicines only treat the symptoms without addressing the root cause and are often associated with severe side effects. Owing to this, more and more people are opting for natural recourses to tackle the condition and manage their symptoms.

  • Turmeric and Ginger tea

Both ginger and turmeric possess natural anti inflammatory properties, which help in strengthening joints. You can consume it in a capsule form or make an infusion and enjoy it as your daily cup of tea.

Directions to make the tea

Boil 2 cups of water and add ½ tsp of ground turmeric and ginger. Let it simmer for 10 – 15 minutes. Strain the mixture, add honey and enjoy the infusion twice daily.

  • Massage with Extra Virgin Olive oil

 

One of the main constituents in extra virgin olive oil is oleocanthol. It inhibits the inflammatory enzymes responsible for pain sensations. Research studies have shown that 1 ½ tbsp of oil is equivalent to 200 mg of ibuprofen. However, since heat destroys oleocanthol, it is necessary to use this oil, either cold pressed or the extra virgin variety. It can be taken internally too for more benefits, but due to its high calorific value it is applied topically and locally.

 

Directions to use:

You may massage a bit of olive oil gently onto your sore joints twice a day.  Drinking 2-3 tablespoons daily is very beneficial, but make sure you are replacing some other form of fat to compensate the high caloric value of the oil.

 

  • Dandelion Leaves

These leaves are rich in vitamins A and C, and can help repair damaged tissue and aid the liver in clearing toxins from the blood. They also show natural anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence of linoleic acid in them. You can enjoy dandelion leaves in a nice salad, or brew tea with them.

Directions to use:

Take 3 tsp of fresh Dandelion leaves or 1 tsp of dried leaves in 1 cup of boiling water. Strain the mixture and drink twice daily. To make a salad, simply toss the greens in with other ingredients or eat them plain with extra virgin olive oil.

 

  • Take an Epsom salt bath

 

Epsom salts contain magnesium sulphate, Magnesium is a very important mineral required for the optimum functioning of our body. It is employed in over 300 different biochemical processes. It helps strengthen our bones, regulates temperature, and relaxes all our muscles and nerve endings, and much more.

Soaking the sore joint in a bowl of warm water with ½ cup of Epsom for a minimum of 15 minutes helps in relieving the pain.

 

  • Exercise

Nothing beats the benefits of keeping yourself physically active. Exercise has time proven advantages and although, seems a formidable task with stiff joints, moderate exercise has many benefits. It helps promote digestion, strengthens the muscles holding the joints and even helps lubricate them by allowing the synovial fluid to anoint the joints better.
